What Is PlayStation

PlayStation is a video game brand created and owned by Sony Interactive Entertainment that encompasses a series of gaming consoles, accessories, online services, and a vast library of games.

Before Sony even thought of starting their own video game franchise, they initially began with a partnership with Nintendo in the late 1980s to develop a CD-ROM add-on for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES).

Called “Play Station,” the project fell apart when Nintendo decided to work with Philips instead.

After the fallout, Ken Kutaragi, a Sony executive and the “Father of PlayStation,” convinced Sony to develop its own console.

Thus, the PlayStation project was born.

Since then, the PlayStation brand has gone on to become one of the leading figureheads of the video game industry, having five mainline consoles, two handhelds, two V.R. consoles and a wide selection of independent properties with iconic characters and worlds.

PlayStation Logo Tattoo

PlayStation Logo Tattoo

@pain_inks

A classic PlayStation icon, the PlayStation symbol consists of a stylized “P” and “S,” with the “P” standing upright and the “S” lying flat underneath it.

The logo was designed by Manabu Sakamoto, a graphic designer at Sony, and aimed to reflect the new era of 3D gaming.

PlayStation Controller Tattoo

PlayStation Controller Tattoo

@dannyelliott_ink

You, of course, can’t play your PlayStation games without the aid of any of the classic PlayStation controllers.

Sony PlayStation has reworked and redefined its controllers over the years, setting industry standards by offering innovative features and ergonomic designs.

Crash Bandicoot Tattoo

Crash Bandicoot Tattoo

@emanuelemasin

While Crash Bandicoot is now a multi-platform series, Crash was originally largely considered a PlayStation mascot before Acti-Vision brought the franchise to other platforms.

Created by Naughty Dog, Crash was designed as Sony’s answer to Mario (Nintendo) and Sonic (Sega), with 3D platforming gameplay aimed to showcase the PlayStation’s technical capabilities.

Crash’s success would lead to multiple sequels and spin-offs, some more successful than others, and he still remains one of gaming’s most iconic characters, featuring in games to this day.

Spyro The Dragon Tattoo

Spyro The Dragon Tattoo

@zarallosink

Created by Insomniac Games, Spyro was another PlayStation mascot before being brought multi-platform by Activision.

Designed as a family-friendly 3D platformer to appeal to younger audiences, Spyro’s simplicity became so popular with families that even grandmothers who had never touched a video game in their lives started to play with the purple dragon.

Spyro tattoo maintains a devoted fanbase, with the 2018 Reignited Trilogy introducing the games to a new generation and sparking hope that similar to Crash, we may get a brand new entry in the series soon.

Croc PlayStation Tattoo

Croc PlayStation Tattoo

@sareushtattoos

While not as universally recognized as either Crash or Spyro, Croc is still a fondly remembered 90’s gaming icon who is soon to have his games remastered.

Pitched as a game starring Yoshi from the Mario franchise, Nintendo passed on the idea, prompting Argonaut to create a new character: Croc, a friendly crocodile.

The game’s design was inspired by the rise of 3D platformers like Super Mario 64 and aimed to bring similar gameplay to the PlayStation.

While Croc was released on the Sega Saturn and P.C., the PlayStation version became the most popular, benefiting from the console’s large user base.

Twisted Metal PlayStation Tattoo

Twisted Metal PlayStation Tattoo

@timofey.nikulshin

Twisted Metal is an iconic vehicular combat franchise known for its over-the-top action, dark humour, and destructible arenas.

Developed by SingleTrac, the idea for Twisted Metal came from David Jaffe and Scott Campbell, who envisioned a game blending vehicles with combat in urban environments.

Launched in 1995 as an exclusive for the original PlayStation, players chose from a roster of unique vehicles with the aim to eliminate other vehicles in an all-out combat tournament called Twisted Metal.

Jak And Daxter Tattoo

Jak And Daxter Tattoo

@samgarbtattoos

The next platformer developed by Crash Bandicoot creators Naughty Dog, Jak and Daxter’s aim was to create a game with an open, seamless world, eliminating loading screens.

After the success of Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy, the series took a dramatic shift, evolving into a hybrid of platforming, action, and open-world exploration with more mature themes inspired by the popularity of games like Grand Theft Auto III.

Since High-Impact Games Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier back in 2009, which wasn’t perceived well by fans, the Jak franchise has remained dormant, only appearing in spin-offs such as PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royal, and guest appearances in games such as Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, and both Astrobot games.

Ratchet And Clank Tattoo

Ratchet And Clank Tattoo

@andrew_inker

The successor franchise to Spyro from Insomniac Games, Ratchet and Clank, was created to target older audiences while maintaining fun and whimsical gameplay by combining platforming with an arsenal of wacky and creative weapons.

Unlike the Jak and Daxter franchise, which has remained dormant since 2009, Ratchet and Clank continues to have games to this day, with its last release being in 2021.

While the series continues to be popular, some critics yearn for Ratchet and Clank to go back to its roots as a satire on consumerism and wrap up its more fantasy adventure cinematic storytelling of Ratchet searching for his race.

Sly Cooper PlayStation Tattoo

Sly Cooper PlayStation Tattoo

@kyousuke.tattoo

While Ratchet and Clank and Jak and Daxter were seen as the PlayStation 2 evolution to the Crash and Spyro mascot, a third platforming mascot also rose through the ranks to cement himself as a PlayStation icon and mascot in his own right.

Sly Cooper is an action-platformer series known for its unique cel-shaded art style and mix of platforming and stealth mechanics.

Created by Sucker Punch Productions, Sly was envisioned as a mix of classic platforming gameplay with stealth mechanics.

Much like Jak and Daxter, Sly has been M.I.A. since 2013 with the release of Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time by Sanzaru Games after Sucker Punch moved onto the Infamous franchise.

Like Jak, Sly has since only appeared in PlayStation All-Stars, Rift Apart, and Astrobot.

Here’s hoping we see him again soon.

MediEvil PlayStation Tattoo

MediEvil PlayStation Tattoo

@arkaytattooer

Another PlayStation classic, MediEvil is an action-adventure hack-and-slash series known for its quirky protagonist and dark yet whimsical world.

Created by SCE Cambridge Studio (then known as Millennium Interactive), MediEvil drew heavy inspiration from Tim Burton’s gothic style, Ghosts ‘n Goblins, and the quirky horror-comedy genre.

The protagonist, Sir Daniel Fortesque, was envisioned as a reluctant and goofy hero who must prove himself as a true hero by defeating Zarok and saving the kingdom.

MediEvil received a full remake in 2019, reigniting interest in the franchise.

Hopefully, we will soon see Sir Dan in full glory in a new franchise, perhaps even in something like a Medievil Souls-type game.

Created by Square (now Square Enix), the game was initially intended for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), but the project shifted to the PlayStation after Square decided to utilize CD-ROMs for greater storage capacity.

The PlayStation’s CD format allowed Square to incorporate cinematic cutscenes, high-quality audio, and 3D graphics, which were impossible on cartridge-based systems like the Nintendo 64.

The reboot of the franchise, which placed Kratos in Norse Mythology, redefined the character following an older, more introspective Kratos as he and his son Atreus journey to fulfill the final wish of Kratos’s wife.
