What Is Digimon

Digimon (short for Digital Monsters) is a Japanese media franchise created in the late 1990s, originally as a line of virtual pet toys such as Tamagotchi, but with battling monsters.

At its core, Digimon is about creatures born in the Digital World, a parallel universe formed from the data of Earth’s communication networks. These creatures, known as Digimon, can grow and transform (called Digivolution) into stronger, often more complex forms.

Digimon began its journey in Japan in 1997 as a virtual pet toy created by Bandai. It was designed to be the “boy version” of Tamagotchi, which was wildly popular at the time. These digital pets were meant to be raised, trained, and be ready for battle.

These early devices were called Digital Monster virtual pets, and they let players feed, train, and fight with their Digimon via infrared connection. That unique battling function is what set Digimon apart from Tamagotchi.

Akiyoshi Hongo is the credited name for Digimon’s creation, but it’s actually a pseudonym for a group of people at Bandai, Toei Animation, and WiZ who collectively helped create the franchise.

The franchise exploded globally with the release of the anime series “Digimon Adventure” in 1999. The show followed seven kids, known as the DigiDestined, who are transported to the Digital World and must work with their Digimon partners to battle evil forces and save both worlds.

After the anime, video games, trading cards, movies, and manga followed quickly. The franchise grew alongside (and sometimes in competition with) Pokémon, though Digimon focused more on storytelling, evolution arcs, and darker themes.
