What Is Anime?

Anime is a term given to hand-drawn or computer-generated animation specifically originating from Japan.

However, it is important to note that while the term ‘anime’ is often referred to as specifically ‘Japanese anime,’ there are works created outside of Japan that are inspired by their Japanese contemporaries yet still given the title of ‘anime.’

Animation began in Japan in the early 20th century when filmmakers experimented with techniques from the United States, Russia, France, and Germany.

By the mid-1930s, anime was being used as an alternative to live-action filmmaking and being supported by the government to create educational shorts and propaganda material.

During the 1960s Japanese artists were able to reduce costs and frame counts by simplifying Disney animated techniques which came to define the medium’s style.

By the 1990s anime started to garner popularity in Western countries with the likes of Dragonball Z and Sailor Moon being dubbed into more than a dozen languages worldwide.
