Now that we know a little about Deer Tattoo meanings, let’s take a look at some of the best Deer Tattoos the internet has to offer.

Red Deer Tattoo

Red Deer Tattoo

@mitchgtattoo

The Red Deer is possibly the most iconic and widespread deer species in the world, which is instantly recognisable for its majestic antlers and rich reddish-brown coat. Found across Europe, parts of Asia, and North Africa, it has also been introduced to places such as New Zealand, where it thrives in forests, grasslands, and mountainous regions, often moving between habitats depending on the season.

These creatures are highly social animals that are extremely alert and cautious, with excellent hearing and smell. They often live in herds, most active at dawn and dusk. A Red Deer stag’s roar is one of its most famous features. It is a deep, echoing call which it uses to attract females and warn off rivals. You can hear it across valleys and forests, especially in places like the Scottish Highlands.

Sika Deer Tattoo

Sika Deer Tattoo

@codyadavistattoos

The Sika Deer (Cervus nippon) is a smaller deer species known for its spotted coat, graceful movements, and strong cultural ties to Japan. Found in Japan, parts of China, Korea, and Russia, they’ve also been introduced to the UK, Ireland, and parts of Europe and North America, where they prefer woodlands, forests, and grassy clearings, often near water.

The Sika Deer’s standout feature is their white spots, which often remain visible for their whole life, unlike many deer species that lose them as adults. Sika Deer are probably most famous due to Nara Park, where they are known to bow to humans in exchange for food. The name “Sika” comes from the Japanese word shika, meaning “deer.”

Fallow Deer Tattoo

Fallow Deer Tattoo

@Adam Cape Tattooist

The Fallow Deer (Dama dama) is a deer species famous for its broad, palm-shaped antlers and spotted coat. Originally native to the Mediterranean region, fallow deer are now found across Europe, parts of Asia and have been introduced in places like Australia, New Zealand, and the Americas, where they thrive in woodlands, parklands, and open grasslands, often in areas shaped by human landscapes.

Fallow Deer are highly social, adaptable, and generally calm but alert, quickly reacting to danger. You can usually find them in parks and estates, which has made them one of the more familiar deer species to humans. During the rut, bucks establish small territories called “leks” where they compete by displaying strength, posture, and vocalisations to gain the favour of the females.

Barasingha Deer Tattoo

Barasingha Deer Tattoo

@raajtattoo

The Barasingha, also known as the swamp deer, is a unique deer species whose name means “twelve-tined” deer. Native to the Indian subcontinent, small populations can also be found in Nepal, where they prefer swamps, wetlands, flooded grasslands, and river plains.

Barasingha Deer’s hooves are wider and splayed, helping them walk on soft, muddy ground, allowing them to move efficiently through flooded areas where predators are slower. Once widespread, habitat loss and hunting caused major population declines, so much so that today, they are considered vulnerable in many areas.

White-Tailed Deer Tattoo

White-Tailed Deer Tattoo

@trazhilltattoos

White-Tailed Deer are native to all of North America, parts of Central America, and the northern areas of South America, living in forests, farmlands, grasslands, and even suburban areas.

White-Tailed Deer’s name comes from a clever survival trick where they raise their tail, revealing bright white fur when alarmed. This acts as a warning signal to other deer and can also confuse predators during escape.

Mule Deer Tattoo

Mule Deer Tattoo

@tattooer_nadi

These deer are native to North America, where they thrive in rocky mountains and foothills, deserts and scrublands, or open forests and grasslands. They’re highly adaptable, often moving between higher and lower elevations depending on the season.

Usually found in small groups or loose herds, they are cautious but curious, often pausing to observe before fleeing. They are most active during dawn and dusk and rely heavily on their excellent vision and hearing to detect danger.

Moose Deer Tattoo

Moose Deer Tattoo

@inktastic_tattoo

The Moose (Alces alces) is the largest member of the deer family, native to North America, Europe and Asia, where they are often referred to as “elk.” They prefer boreal forests, wetlands and lakes in the cold, northern climates, especially in places with plenty of water and dense vegetation.

Moose are mostly solitary and gentle animals, but can be dangerous if threatened. They are known for having quiet, slow movements one moment, then suddenly deciding to charge the next.

Moose are also surprisingly adept swimmers, capable of swimming long distances and even diving underwater to feed on aquatic plants. They love water  as it helps them to cool down in warmer months.

Moose exist in Eurasia as well as the Americas, as during the last Ice Age, a land bridge called the Bering Land Bridge existed between Siberia and Alaska. Animals, including the Moose/Elk, migrated across it, and once the ice melted, sea levels rose and separated the continents.

The populations evolved slightly differently over time, with the North American moose being generally larger and heavier, and the Eurasian elk being slightly smaller on average.

Pudu Deer Tattoo

Pudu Deer Tattoo

@hesper_tattoo

The Pudu is the world’s smallest deer, which is native to South America, mainly found in Chile, Argentina and further north in countries like Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru, where they live in the dense forests, bamboo thickets and mountainous cloud forest regions, where they rely heavily on thick vegetation for cover.

Pudu are extremely shy and solitary animals, being mostly active at dawn, dusk, or night, hiding and staying still to avoid predators. Their small stature makes them extremely vulnerable to predators, so they rarely venture into open spaces and stay deep within forest cover.

Indian Muntjac Deer Tattoo

Indian Muntjac Deer Tattoo

Much like the Pudu Deer, the Muntjac is solitary and territorial, relying heavily on staying unseen rather than running in open spaces. The Muntjac has a sharp, loud barking sound that sounds similar to a dog’s, which it uses to warn others of predators or signal danger.

Water Deer Tattoo

Water Deer Tattoo

@Lozyoungtattoo

Another shy and elusive species, the Philippine Spotted Deer is mostly nocturnal, usually living solitary or in small groups. They are so sensitive to disturbance that they avoid human contact as much as possible.

Reindeer Deer Tattoo

Reindeer Deer Tattoo

@madlynevanlooy

The Reindeer (Rangifer tarandus), known as a Caribou in North America, is one of the most famous deer species, with a rare trait amongst deer species where both males and females grow antlers.

Reindeer are found in cold northern regions, including Canada, Alaska, Scandinavia and Russia, where they thrive in the Arctic tundra, boreal forests, and mountain regions. This deer species is highly social, living in large herds that undertake long-distance migrations, with some travelling over 5,000 km per year, making them among the most migratory land animals on Earth.

Reindeer also have an amazing trait where they can change the colour of their eyes based on the seasons. During the summer, they have golden/amber coloured eyes, and in the Winter, they have a deep blue colouring. This is due to the tapetum lucidum, a biological mirror that reflects light back through the retina, helping animals see better in low light.

Roe Deer Tattoo

Roe Deer Tattoo

The Ceryneian Hind Deer Tattoo

The Ceryneian Hind Deer Tattoo

@permaloss.ink

The Ceryneian Hind is a legendary, sacred deer from Greek mythology, which is one of the Twelve Labours of Heracles. The Ceryneian Hind had golden antlers and sometimes hooves of bronze, was incredibly swift, and sacred to Artemis, the goddess of the hunt and wilderness, with harm coming to it being considered a serious offence against the goddess.

When Heracles was tasked with capturing the hind alive without harming it, he chased it for a full year across Greece. Never growing tired, the deer constantly stayed just out of reach, but eventually, Heracles managed to capture it carefully by trapping or tiring it.

When Artemis confronted him, Heracles had to explain himself and show respect, promising to return the hind after completing his task. The hind test went against Heracles’ usual brute force approach, requiring instead control, respect, and discipline.

The Stranger’s Inhabitant Deer Tattoo

The Stranger’s Inhabitant Deer Tattoo

@60jams

The inhabitants of the Stranger, affectionately called “Owlks” by fans, are an alien species coming from the Echoes of the Eye DLC of the Outer Wilds video game. These are extremely tall, antlered, owl-like beings who are highly intelligent and advanced.

They appear to be the first race to discover the signal coming from the Eye of the Universe, and in order to reach it, they stripped their home planet of all its resources to build a ship to head toward it.

The inhabitants treated the signal as a religious deity, building monuments to it and revering it. Once they discovered the truth that the eye would eventually lead to ultimate destruction (possibly unaware of the universe’s rebirth), they panicked, destroyed their monuments and hid the signal from the rest of the universe.

With no home to return to, the inhabitants created a simulated reality to imitate their homeland. One night, one Owlk awoke from the simulation and deactivated the device blocking the eyes signal, allowing the Nomai to pick up on the signal, before it was blocked again, and the Owlk was sentenced to eternal imprisonment.
