1. Guts Tattoo

Guts, also known as the Black Swordsman, is the protagonist of the Berserk series.

A boy born from the corpse of his deceased mother, Gut’s life was filled with betrayal, leading him to become hardened and have a brutally realistic outlook on life.

Initially solely driven by survival alone, Guts finds purpose in life upon joining the Band of the Hawk.

However, following the events known as ‘The Eclipse,’ Guts sets out on a solo journey of retribution before slowly learning over time that protecting Casca is what is most important and that he can’t do it alone. 

2. Casca Tattoo

Casca, once a poor mountain girl living in a remote village, was picked up by Griffith and allowed to join the Band of the Falcon.

Initially disliking Guts because he superseded her importance to Griffith, whom she idolized, Casca begins to admire Guts and develops affection for him.

However, following the events of the Eclipse, she suffers severe psychological trauma, causing her to regress to a largely mute, infantile state. 

3. Griffith Tattoo

Griffith is the main antagonist of the Berserk series.

He is currently the leader of the reborn Band of the Falcon and Supreme Commander of the Midland Regular Army.

Driven by a desire to have a kingdom of his own, Griffith, through the power of the crimson Behelit, sacrifices his former Band of the Falcon to become the powerful demon and fifth member of the God Hand, Femto. 

4. Puck Tattoo

After setting out on his quest as the Black Swordsman, Puck is the first companion to join Guts.

A member of the Pisky race, he left the realm of Elfheim out of sheer boredom or because he fell asleep on a Seagull's back and fell off, leaving him stranded on the mainland.

Puck joined a troupe of performers before becoming a captive of the Snake Baron's bandits, who Guts would eventually slaughter, freeing him to join Guts on his adventure. 

5. Schierke Tattoo

Schierke is a witch in training and the disciple of the witch Flora.

Mature for her age, she gets along well with all of Guts' troupe except Isidro, whom she sees as immature and annoying, causing friction between the pair.

Having trained under Flora, Schierke is an incredibly powerful witch whose power has been invaluable to The Black Swordsman Party. 

6. Void Tattoo

A member of, and although never stated, Void appears to be the leader of the God Hand, having appeared amongst distinct members of the God Hand who predate his current kinsmen.

Although always talking about the ‘flow of causality,’ the God Hand members particularly Slan, seem surprised that Skull Knight escapes the Eclipse with Guts and Casca.

However, Void doesn’t seem surprised, suggesting that he may have foresight beyond the other God Hand members. 

7. Femto Tattoo

Following Guts’ departure from the Band of the Falcon, Griffith seduces Princess Charlotte to further his goals of his own kingdom.

However, when the King finds out the truth, he has Griffith tortured.

Griffith suffers from endless torture for over a year and, during this time, experiences visions of demons claiming to be his kinsmen. 

After being rescued by the Band of the Falcon and Guts, Griffith attempts to end his life.

However, the blood from his neck lands on the Crimson Behelit, leading to events that transform him into the God Hand member Femto. 

8. Ubik Tattoo

Ubik is a member of the God Hand who manipulates the Behelit's chosen ones into sacrificing something of value to them.

Ubik does most of the talking on behalf of the God Hand, and while he may never lie to the Behelit’s chosen, he does manipulate and twist the truth to push his victims closer to accepting the deal.

9. Slan Tattoo

Slan, the only female member of the current God Hand, who, despite Femto's claim of Guts being below the notice of the God Hand, has a fascination with him, even having a desire to see him reincarnate as a demon by way of a sacrifice.

10. Conrad Tattoo

Conrad is the final member of the God Hand, who can spread pestilence through the mortal world through diseased rodents.

Like almost all of the God Hand members except for Femto, little is known about Conrad's human life or how he became a member. 

11. Judeau Tattoo

Judeau was one of the first members of Griffith’s Band of the Falcon, who was a tumbler from a circus group.

Despite his feelings for Casca, he respected the burgeoning relationship between her and Guts, even encouraging them to develop their relationship further.

Judeau would meet his end during the Eclipse, but not before heroically saving Casca and stating the band wouldn't be finished so long as she remained alive.

12. Behelit Tattoo

A Behelit (or Beherit) is a spiritual stone object that acts as a key linking a deep layer of the Astral World to the Physical World.

Each Behelit is pre-ordained to belong to its ‘master’ and always finds its way to them when the desire is great enough.

Once activated, the Behelits face will rearrange itself to form a distressed face, crying tears of blood and screaming before sending the user or those close by into an interdimensional space. 

13. Crimson Behelit Tattoo

Unlike the standard Behelit, a Crimson Behelit belongs to those who are destined to become members of the God Hand.

Only during the Eclipse, every 216 years, is an owner of the Crimson Behelit granted an audience with the God Hand and offered a choice to join their ranks. 

14. Beast of Darkness Tattoo

The Beast of Darkness is the manifestation of Guts' wrath and bloodlust.

The Beast itself is comprised of Guts’ most negative emotions, forcing him to seek out carnage and attempting to take over his mind.

When dawning the Berserker armor, the beast warps the helmet into the shape of its own visage, consuming Guts’ mind, only being stopped through the help of Schierikes astral projection help. 

15. Guts And The Beast Of Darkness Tattoo

When dawning, the Berserker armor aligns with its wearer, driving them by their violent emotions and making them forget about pain and fear.

It becomes imbued with the Beast of Darkness enveloping the Black Swordman's mind.

While Sherikie can keep it at bay, it chooses to bide its time until the deaths of Guts' companions to continue its rampage. 

16. Beast Of Darkness V Hawk Of Light Tattoo

The story of Berserk is the story of Guts and Griffith.

17. Berserker Armor Tattoo

The Berserker armor is a highly durable suit of body armor currently worn by Guts and formally by Skull Knight.

Those who wear the suit are known as Berserkers due to the superhuman strength and inhuman ferocity they are bestowed.

The armor itself was forged by the dwarf blacksmith Hanarr, who imbued it with an ominous od that aligns with its wearer.

18. Skull Knight Tattoo

Skull Knight is the self-proclaimed "foe of the inhumans" who has fought against demonkind for a millennium.

Skull Knight is approximately 1000 years old and suspected of being King Gaiseric, a legendary conqueror who brought order to war-torn lands and developed the first continental empire in human history.

19. Nosferatu Zodd Tattoo

Nosferatu Zodd is a legendary warrior and one of if not the most powerful apostle in the Berserk universe.

Zodds existence is completely devout to combat, seeking out the “ultimate strong one" to do battle with.

He initially battled against both Guts and Griffith before staying his killing blow, seeing the Crismon Behelit dangling from Griffiths's neck. 

20. Brand Of Sacrifice Tattoo

The Brand of Sacrifice is a sigil used to mark those who are used for a sacrificial ceremony in which those consecrated by the laws of causality transcend their humanity.

It is one of the best lore-accurate tattoos you can get, making it seem like you were at the Invocation of Doom and survived, just like Guts and Casca. 

21. Zodd V Skull Knight Tattoo

One of the long-running duels in the Berserk series is between Zodd and Skull Knight.

While Zodd is always happy to see Skull Knight, even so much as to call him ‘old friend,’ Skull Knight appears indifferent to Zodd yet does acknowledge their long-running rivalry. 

22. Dark Souls X Berserk Tattoo

The Dark Souls series has drawn a number of its inspirations from the Berserk series, with Dark Souls creator Hidetaka Miyazaki referencing the manga on multiple occasions throughout his gameography.

This includes weapons, enemy designs, and NPCs, all of which are clearly influenced, if not directly taken, such as the Greatsword directly from the manga pages.

Following Guts's departure and Griffith’s capture and torture, the Band of the Falcon needed a new leader.

Casca took the role because she was a determined and capable leader who helped prevent the group's complete annihilation.

As leader of the Band of the Falcon, and with Guts's help, she successfully helped save Griffith from his torture and escape Wyndham. 

24. Chibi Puck Tattoo

While not Puck's actual appearances, he is more often than not drawn in his Chibi style for the added comic relief he brings to the series.

This style helps to lighten the mood and offers a break from the often grim and violent themes of the story.

His design also helps to highlight his innocence and playful nature, enhancing his role as a foil to the more serious characters.

25. Dragon Slayer Tattoo

The Dragon Slayer is the signature weapon used by Guts.

The blade was made by a young blacksmith, Godot after a King sent out a proclamation to all of his vassals to forge a sword capable of killing a dragon.

Although Godot took the task seriously, his liege lord became angry at how crude and impractical the sword was, forcing him to leave the castle town.

Years later, the sword proved invaluable with Guts finding and using it to slay an unnamed apostle. 

26. Mini Casca Tattoo

During Sherikie and Farnase’s journey through the ‘Corridor of Dreams,’ the two enter Casca’s dreamscape, where they discover a fractured doll representing Casca's current state.

The dreamscape manifests Casca’s psyche, with the doll representing her broken self, having returned to a childlike state following the trauma suffered during the eclipse. 

27. Dog Guts Tattoo

Also within Casca’s dreamscape is a Dog with three legs representing Guts.

The black hound, depicted as battered and protective, embodies Guts' role throughout the series as Casca's fierce protector.

The dog highlights the dual aspects of Guts' character, with his loyalty and protective instincts towards Casca contrasted with his rage and monstrous violence.

28. Berserk X Adventure Time Tattoo

Despite initially not liking Guts due to him taking Griffiths's attention away from her.

Throughout the numerous battles and hardships together, their relationship begins to change.

31. Ouroborus Berserk Tattoo

An Ouroboros is an ancient symbol depicting a serpent or dragon eating its own tail.

Originating from ancient Egyptian iconography, it was later adopted into Greek and other cultural symbolisms. 

The Ouroboros represents cyclical concepts, such as the eternal cycle of life, death, and rebirth, or the perpetual renewal of time and existence.

This Ouroborus Tattoo has Guts in his armor, with the Beast of Darkness forming the spiral. 

32. The Eclipse Tattoo

After being thrown from his horse, Griffiths's battered body lands in a lake.

Here, beneath the Sun and the Moon crossing over, Griffith finds his Crimson Behelit beneath the water.

While Guts rushes to catch up to him, his blood runs down his arm, activating the Behelit and starting the events of the Eclipse. 

33. Kid Guts Tattoo

As a child, Guts was raised by a mercenary group led by a man named Gambino.

Under his teachings, Guts became a swordsman at age 6 and saw Gambino as his father figure.

Guts was taught always to be ready for battle, so he chose to sleep with his sword close at hand.

Gambino would later betray Guts, forcing him to kill him making Guts now sleep with his sword stemming from his experiences of betrayal and violence, not just from enemies but from those closest to him.

34. Chimimoryo Tattoo

While only seen very briefly by the Black Swordsman Party during their visit to the Qliphoth, the Chimimoryo had made quite an impact.

The greater Berserk community has referred to it as "Schnoz" since early 2003.

35. Cute God Hand Tattoo

This depiction of the God Hand is actually Puck's memory of what they look like, with the manga stating that ‘this is the limit of his memory.’

The scene under the rain captures Guts’ mixed emotions of freedom, loneliness, and uncertainty about his future.

The rainfall symbolizes both a cleansing and a sense of foreboding, as it marks the beginning of a darker, more introspective journey for Guts.

While starting the series seemingly rough and uncaring, it wasn’t until the conclusion of the Black Swordsman arc do we see Guts showing his true emotions.

After defeating The Count and saving his daughter, Theresia blames Guts and threatens to kill him for the death of her father and the trauma she suffered.

While Guts says he’s ready whenever she is with his normal cold demeanor, upon catching up, Puck notices that Guts is shedding tears, possibly due to being labeled as the monster in this situation or because he can relate to Theriesia’s betrayal by her father. 

39. Guts Saving Casca Tattoo

Possibly one of the most iconic scenes in the entire series is during the Eclipse when the Band of the Falcon is being devoured and killed one by one.

Griffith, now Femto, takes Casca into his grasp in front of her lover, Guts, and takes advantage of her.

In a rage, Guts takes a blade to his arm that is trapped within an apostle's mouth and cuts it off.

Unfortunately, he is quickly stopped, unable to stop what is transpiring in front of him.

However, soon, the Skull Knight breaks into the interdimensional space, saving both Guts and Casca. 

40. Demon Hand Tattoo

One of the most iconic cover art for the Berserk franchise is from Chapter 1 (which isn’t actually Chapter 1), which is also featured at the start of every episode in the 1997 anime adaptation.

It depicts a demon's arm rising out of the smoke with pointed fingernails grasping hold of a Crimson Behelit. 

41. Skull Berserk Tattoo

Another iconic illustration by the late Kentaro Miura was from chapter 9, ‘Skull Knight.’

In it was a Skull with a crown of Roses and thorns and a Behelit popping out from the crack at the top of the Skull. 

Kentaro Miura was born July 11, 1966 in Chiba, Japan. His greatest work began serialization in 1989 and continued until his untimely death. 

By 2023, Berserk had over 60 million copies in circulation, making it one of the best-selling manga series of all time.

His work continues to impact and inspire other mangas, films, TV shows, video games, and anime to this day, with Berserk continuing publication under Studio Gaga, supervised by Kouji Mori. Rest in Peace, Kentaro Miura, and good luck to those at Studio Gaga.
